Mission Alignment
Small Midwest and regional farms often have only a narrow window — as little as five to seven days at a time — of optimal planting conditions each season. A detachable, autonomous planting tool extends how much of that window a small farm's own labor can actually cover, without the cost of commercial precision planting equipment.
Problem Statement
Small and mixed farms need precise seed placement across multiple acres without refill, without the soil compaction of large planters, and without commercial-scale cost. The tool also needs to detach cleanly so the transport platform underneath it can be reused for other work.
Scope Boundary

- Seed metering and a hopper sized for a multi-acre run without refill
- Row spacing control
- Mechanical and electrical attachment to the transport platform's implement interface

- The transport chassis, drivetrain, and autonomy stack itself — this solution assumes that interface as a given input
Product Components
Hopper & Metering
- Hopper capacity sized per crop and seeding rate for a full multi-acre run
- Seed metering adapted from proven commodity planter row-unit designs rather than reinvented from scratch
Row Control
- Variable spacing driven by a planting plan supplied from the data platform — crop type, target population, field zone
Ground Contact
- Minimal-disturbance furrow opener and closing wheel or hollow auger, sized for the platform's low-compaction design goal
Phased Milestones
- Bench test of the metering approach against target seed types
- Static field test of hopper capacity, furrow/auger quality, and seed depth consistency
- Mobile integration on the transport platform for a first real planting pass on a test plot
- Multi-acre unattended run validated on a real crop
Open Research Questions
- What minimal-disturbance furrow opener or auger designs already exist in no-till and regenerative equipment literature that would fit a lightweight platform, rather than the heavy tractor-mounted openers built for much larger machinery?
- What seed hopper capacity is actually required for multiple acres without refill, by crop type?
Success Metrics
- Seed depth and spacing consistently within agronomically acceptable tolerance for at least one target crop
- A successful multi-acre unattended run without refill or a jam requiring manual intervention
