Data Cooperative Ecosystem
Open standards and an opt-in data commons that let other sensor makers interoperate and turn aggregated farm data into a public benefit, on the farmer's terms.

Mission Alignment
This is the commons layer that ties the whole program together: open standards that let other sensor manufacturers interoperate, and an opt-in data cooperative that creates benefit for researchers, policymakers, environmental stewards, and other farmers — beyond what any single farm's data provides alone.
Problem Statement
Precision agriculture data today is fragmented across closed vendor platforms, and farmers have real, documented reasons to distrust how aggregated farm data gets used commercially. No affordable, open, farmer-trust-preserving data-sharing infrastructure exists for the small and regenerative farm segment.
Scope Boundary
In Scope
- An open, versioned API and schema so any sensor — third-party or hobbyist — can push compatible data into a farmer's account
- Data-cooperative opt-in mechanics and a consent architecture
- A pipeline for publishing de-identified, aggregated public datasets
Out of Scope
- The underlying data platform infrastructure itself — this solution defines the open, public-facing layer built on top of it
- Any specific hardware
Product Components
Open API & Schema
- A publicly documented ingestion specification so any compatible sensor can contribute data
- Standardized field and unit definitions so data from different hardware sources is directly comparable
Consent Architecture
- Per-farm, per-dataset opt-in toggle with plain-language terms
- Full export and delete rights, at any time, with no exceptions
- A visible incentive for opting in, rather than a hidden trade
Aggregation Pipeline
- De-identification and regional aggregation of opted-in data
- Published as open datasets for research and policy use, or licensed with revenue shared back to the cooperative rather than extracted unilaterally
Phased Milestones
- Publish the open ingestion API and schema alongside the data platform's first release, even before any external integrations exist
- Integrate free public data sources — weather, soil survey, climate normals — immediate value, no partnership required
- Launch the data-cooperative opt-in with a values-aligned seed community
- Publish a first aggregate or public dataset, or research collaboration, once enough farms have opted in
- Begin outreach to sensor manufacturers once the farm base and public dataset value are demonstrable
Open Research Questions
- What do existing agricultural-data-rights frameworks specify as best practice for consent, ownership, and portability — worth adopting rather than reinventing?
- What legal structure — a data trust, a cooperative, a straightforward terms-of-service — best protects farmer data rights while still allowing the aggregation and publishing model this solution describes?
- Which academic institutions, extension services, or policy bodies would be realistic early partners for publishing aggregate regenerative-agriculture data, and what format do they typically need?
Success Metrics
- A published, versioned open API and schema exists from the first release, independent of how much external adoption follows
- At least one real aggregate dataset or research collaboration published within the cooperative's first year
- Zero data-trust incidents, with a full consent audit trail maintained
